Ben Brown Apprenticeship blog

Hi, my name is Ben,

I have been working at Old Mill as a Tax Trainee since September 2023. Before starting my career at Old Mill I was a student at the University of the West of England studying Accounting and Finance which I graduated from in July 2022. I had a year out of work and studying to travel to various places, with the highlight being Thailand.

Once I had finished exploring the world and started to look for jobs I knew that I wanted to utilise my degree, but I wasn’t entirely sure what path to take. I was lucky enough to know someone within Old Mill who referred me for work experience where I was able to get a feel for some of the roles a career in Accounting and Finance can lead. I had never considered a career in tax, however, was convinced by the team here and the ever-changing tax landscape due to new rules and laws being implemented.

Since being at Old Mill, I have felt very welcome, which is often a worry for apprentices starting work in a professional environment, and trusted that I can deliver for clients. I originally started within our Private Client team helping clients meet their compliance requirements by preparing their tax returns and providing valuable service through communication. I have since moved into our Corporate Tax team where I have been working on corporate tax returns and am now looking to be involved in some advisory work. These are some of the perks of a career in tax at Old Mill as you can get a hands-on experience with the various taxes which really helps with your study.

I am one exam away from completing my ATT qualification (Association of Taxation Technicians) and will then move on to studying for my CTA qualification (Chartered Tax Adviser) shortly after. As part of the apprenticeship, there are several skills days that are focused on improving your soft skills which often are the areas that young professionals struggle with the most, these provide great personal development that you can take into everyday work.

Everyone at Old Mill I have come across has been so supportive and always guiding me on how I can improve. Our tax team is incredibly passionate about what we do, and it is such a valuable experience being able to witness this firsthand, I cannot recommend it enough.
