Chloe Lawrence Apprenticeship blog

February 5, 2024

Hello, my name is Chloe.

I am 33 years old. I have 2 young children and life with them is my hobby, alongside travelling and socialising. The accountancy world is a new place for me but I love it!

Past

After leaving school, I studied Beauty Therapy (very different, I know) in which I started my career by working in 5* spas and retreats. This is where I honed my customer service skills.

After 10 years, I left the Beauty industry for a new challenge. Unsure of what I wanted to do, I joined Nationwide Building Society. My role at Nationwide was a personal banking manager where, again, I helped clients with their finances and advised on how we could help save, make and protect their money. It was within this role I found my love for ‘numbers’.

I had my youngest child in lockdown in which everything changed, I took the plunge and started my Level 2 AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification at Yeovil College. Due to my love of numbers and working with clients, accountancy was the career I really wanted!

Present

I was recommended by the college to reach out to Old Mill as I knew I would benefit from working on the job. They offered me an apprenticeship and, in May 2022, I started my journey with Old Mill.  I have to say I haven’t looked back.

An apprenticeship was the best option for me. My day-to-day role within the Yeovil Commercial team is to prepare accounts using all the knowledge I have learnt, preparing Personal Tax returns, helping clients with their software and queries and much more. I work very closely with my colleagues and the support that they give is invaluable. I am able to work remotely when required and I have flexed my hours to suit the dreaded school run.

This was a great opportunity for me and I will be forever grateful to Old Mill for giving me the opportunity to work in a job that I love. I have now progressed to Level 4 AAT and am looking forward to what this qualification has in store.

Future

At Old Mill there are many different career opportunities that can be taken, they have access to many different areas of expertise such as Tax, Payroll, Financial Planning etc.

Old Mill are an advocate to try different things and see what works best for their employees as one path does not suit everyone. Moving forward, I am unsure which path I will take with finance, but I know Old Mill will support me every step of the way.
