Gabi Creed Apprenticeship blog

February 14, 2025
Hi, my name is Gabi,
I have been working as a Trainee Accountant at Old Mill since March 2023.
I joined Old Mill following sixth form having just completed my A Level qualifications in Maths, Chemistry and Psychology. I opted for the apprenticeship route into accounting over the more traditional university path as I was keen to get stuck into practical work.
I initially started at Old Mill in an accounts role, but after demonstrating an interest in tax work was offered a secondment in rural tax, which has now resulted in a permanent position. One of the benefits of working at Old Mill is the development prospects, with a range of job roles within the firm there is the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the areas that interest you most.
My role now consists of preparing Inheritance Tax exposure reviews for clients, drafting reports on potential tax implications for planning work and preparing Capital Gains Tax computations.
I have found the apprenticeship scheme to provide a good balance between the professional experience gained on the job and the groundwork of technical knowledge which is built on by the professional qualifications.
I have recently gained my Level 3 AAT qualification (Association of Accounting Technicians) and am currently in the process of studying for my Level 4. Throughout the apprenticeship, there is consistent support provided by both Old Mill and College tutors with study days in preparation for exams and apprenticeship days which help build on soft skills.
I hope to complete my Level 4 AAT qualification later this year and following this am keen to progress onto a chartered qualification. My experience of the apprenticeship scheme so far has been really positive. Opting for an apprenticeship has enabled me to start my professional career, be supported through professional qualifications and still have the time to spend doing the other things I enjoy, including travelling. Just last year I was able to go on a backpacking trip to Australia and an Interrail trip around France, Switzerland and Italy!
