Jodie Pike Apprenticeship blog

February 2, 2024

Hey! My name is Jodie,

I am 25 years old, and I started my Old Mill journey as a trainee accountant within the Yeovil Commercial team back in September 2020.

Outside of Old Mill, I enjoy spending time with my partner, friends and most importantly my dog, Riley. I am highly competitive and love all things sport! I play for our Old Mill netball team in the summer, as well as playing for a local team in the winter. Whilst doing an apprenticeship, I find it really important to maintain a healthy work-life balance and still do the things that bring me joy.

Prior to Old Mill, I worked as a customer service consultant for a bank. My original plan was to study for AAT on evening courses whilst working full time, however, I had heard such amazing things about Old Mill as an employer, that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to apply for their apprenticeship role, I haven’t looked back since!

The apprenticeship scheme at Old Mill gives me the opportunity to expand my skill set and benefit from hands-on experience. Best of all, I am able to learn from my colleagues on a daily basis, who offer me continuous guidance and support in my professional development.

Old Mill provides consistent support throughout your apprenticeship; you have your study days, which for AAT is typically 1 day a week out at college, and then for ACCA, you complete study and revision in week blocks.

Due to the amazing support from my colleagues, tutors and Old Mill, I have most recently just finished my AAT level 4 qualification and can now proudly say I am a qualified accountant. I have also just started the process to become a chartered accountant, with my first exam for ACCA coming up in March.

The skills I have gained during my apprenticeship and AAT have allowed me to progress in my role at Old Mill, moving from a trainee accountant role when I started, which consisted of preparing accounts, tax returns and P11ds, into the Senior Audit role that I am currently in. The Audit Senior role allows me to build great client relationships, as well as help guide the junior members of the team.

For my future, I am hoping to finish ACCA and become a chartered accountant as well as continue progressing in my role at Old Mill as an Audit Senior. I also hope to continue building strong client relationships, and networks within the firm. I am very grateful to work alongside such an amazing team and have made great friendships. I look forward to developing an exciting career at Old Mill and being a part of the company’s future.
