Meet rural apprentice Verity Adams

Passionate about the rural sector, a farmer’s daughter and social secretary for Wedmore Young Farmers, Verity has brought her love of agriculture together with her love for numbers. Verity joined Old Mill in July 2018 straight from school at the age of 16 after she was pointed our way from her school careers’ adviser.

So why did the apprentice route appeal?

‘My learning style is very practical and learning on the job was a much better fit for me, rather than staying at college to do my A-levels. I can now combine my experience on the farm, into my role as an apprentice in the Wells rural team.’

Verity started her apprenticeship in February 2019 and alongside the technical accountancy elements she is also widening her agricultural experience whilst speaking to clients and learning from her colleagues who specialise in the sector.

‘I found that when speaking to clients on the phone and meeting them at country shows I get to find out about their businesses, the issues they face and also it helps to widen my knowledge which is invaluable as I work through my apprenticeship.’

It’s not just the technical expertise, which is part of their learning, the soft skills are also a big element for those on the apprenticeship scheme, and by working alongside our financial experts this really helps bring out their confidence in these areas.

So, what’s next for Verity?

‘My apprenticeship is a 16-month programme and I’d like to continue right through from my AAT to my ACA qualification. I’ve really enjoyed working with Xero and have recently completed my Xero certification and this is an area I’d really like to explore.’

After a busy January, Verity’s love of the outdoors keeps her grounded, and she enjoys spending time with her niece, taking her dogs out for long walks as well as spending time with her pony.

It just shows that when you can combine your two passions, it really does give you the best of both worlds.
