Megan Wise, my journey from Apprentice to Operations Team Leader

My first experience of Old Mill was at my interview day when I joined a number of other candidates for a day of group activities, team tasks, soft skills and an interview; resulting in me securing an apprenticeship.  Over the past three years I have progressed to Operations Team Leader.

I remember the call coming through from the Old Mill recruitment team and I had to ask to be excused from my lesson at Yeovil College, it was the best call I could’ve hoped for and I was so excited to start my journey at Old Mill.

I always wanted to work with numbers, after completing A-levels in economics, accounts and psychology and an AS Level in photography, it was the natural fit for me to look for a career working with numbers.’

Coming from a rural area and spending my childhood horse riding, I knew I wanted to work within the rural community.  Old Mill gave me the opportunity to do just that when I joined our specialist Rural Accounts Team.

I have been at Old Mill for just over 3 years now, starting with my apprenticeship in conjunction with Yeovil College and have been studying for my Association of Accounting Technicians Level 4. ‘I really wanted to do an apprenticeship so I can learn on the job, whilst gaining experience. My brother completed an apprenticeship and shared the value of this route, it was a no brainer for me.’

I am now an Operations Team Leader combining the responsibility for planning and coordination of accounts and tax production.  Excellent client service is at the heart of everything we do at Old Mill and this role has me creating, developing and implementing effective resourcing plans.

And I am delighted to be part of Yeovil office’s social committee, promoting regular events and wellness activities.

‘My gut feeling about Old Mill was absolutely right, everyone is so friendly in my team, when I speak to others in the business and clients, I always get such a warm welcome, Ian our MD even brought round donuts on the 31 January!’

‘As soon as I walked into the building, I knew I wanted to work here’
