Nicole Summers Apprenticeship blog

February 11, 2025
Hi, I’m Nicole!
I joined Old Mill as a Finance Assistant in November 2023, and I’m excited to share my apprenticeship journey.
My role in the finance team means my day-to-day work is quite diverse, which I love. My primary tasks range from processing payroll and expenses to assisting with overhead reporting, budgets and management accounts.
My apprenticeship journey has had its ups and downs. I decided university wasn’t the route for me after studying A levels and so I looked into doing an apprenticeship. I discovered there are so many benefits of an apprenticeship, such as gaining hands-on experience while learning, earning a salary while studying and developing important soft skills like problem-solving and communication. So, with that in mind, when I finished my A levels, I started my AAT level 3 qualification under an apprenticeship. However, after only having one virtual lesson, I was made redundant which felt like a huge setback as I had only just started. Nevertheless, after some time I managed to start my apprenticeship again and successfully passed my level 3 qualification in 2024 with Old Mill.
Joining Old Mill was the best move I made for my apprenticeship, as my previous employer only offered distance learning, which didn’t suit my learning style. Old Mill didn’t hesitate to let me finish my level 3 qualification with Yeovil College on day release, which helped my learning massively, and I’m now currently progressing through my AAT Level 4 qualification.
In the future I see myself doing a level 7 qualification, although I’ve not decided which yet! This will allow me to take on additional responsibilities within the finance team, such as assisting with more advanced reporting. I’m keen to learn from my colleagues in the support team and contribute to the team where I can.
Outside of work, I like to be active, mostly hiking, cycling and recently running (shout out Old Mill Run Club). Maintaining a work-life balance is essential, especially as an apprentice, because balancing work, studies, and a personal life can be tricky. So, time away from screens and being outdoors helps me maintain that balance.
My personal piece of advice for future apprentices would be to stay positive when you have setbacks. I’ve faced some challenges along the way, but despite these obstacles, I’m incredibly grateful for my apprenticeship and the development it offers. Without the support from Old Mill, I wouldn’t have made it this far in my apprenticeship, and I’m truly grateful for the encouragement and opportunities I’ve been given.
