Sophie Ewens Apprenticeship blog

Hello I’m Sophie!

I joined Old Mill in September 2020 at 17 and entered the trainee accountant role within Yeovil Commercial. I had originally started studying for A levels after leaving secondary school but decided to try a different education route and instead, start an apprenticeship within accounting. My role currently consists of preparing accounts for limited companies and I have recently carried out my first preparation of an audited set of accounts. I also assist with personal tax returns, P11Ds, management accounts and I have taken part in various client audits.

From the beginning of my career within Old Mill, I have been given a variety of types of client work and feel that by choosing this route, I have been able to consistently gain commercial work experience, whilst also progressing in studies and gaining professional qualifications. In August 2022 I successfully achieved my AAT level three qualification, and I am part way through my level four AAT studies.

My studies consist of attending Yeovil College one day per week, in preparation for exams throughout the year. These have been successful thanks to the help I have received from teachers at the college. Old Mill have also been very supportive by providing study days to prepare for any exams.

By taking the apprenticeship route, I can apply the technical knowledge that I have learnt from my studies in many aspects of my client work, which has really aided my confidence when discussing technical matters with clients. My studies have aided my development when taking on more complex jobs and has enabled me to keep progressing within my role. I am challenged consistently with new, exciting projects, but I am surrounded by a team of colleagues who are always willing to help and pass on their own experience and knowledge.

My apprenticeship has really emphasised that there are options to continue educational learning whilst also gaining valuable skills within a real work environment to aid my communication, teamworking and organisational skills.

I feel very grateful to have entered a role within such a lovely team and have made great friends whilst at Old Mill. The company has provided lots of social activities which in turn has enabled me to develop friendships alongside working relationships.
