Tom Reddaway Apprenticeship blog

December 6, 2022

Hi, I’m Tom, I joined Old Mill in May 2022 as part of the Rural team in Yeovil. Before I started at Old Mill, I had finished university in Winchester, and I was working in Tesco while looking for a more permanent job.

I went to university and got a degree in Accounting and Finance; this has then allowed me to be currently working towards my ACA with the end goal of becoming a chartered accountant.

My Old Mill Journey

I went to university and got a degree in Accounting and Finance; this has then allowed me to be currently working towards my ACA with the end goal of becoming a chartered accountant.

Why Old Mill?

I chose to join Old Mill as when looking into the company during the interview process, I got the feeling that they were a very local southwest company, and what they valued seemed to align with me, and it seemed like a very nice environment to work in. I’m someone who has always been interested in maths and anything to do with numbers and when starting college I focused that passion into accounting, which then turned into and accounting degree, the next step on from that was to join an accounting practice where I could pursue this further, and Old Mill was somewhere I could see that happening. I had also heard very positive recommendations from a friend who worked in the Rural team and had been there for 6 years prior to me joining. The location was also ideal, I’ve always been local to Yeovil and being offered a position in the Yeovil office was ideal.

Day to Day

Day to day, my job mainly consists of preparing the accounts and tax returns for our clients. This is also mixed in with communication with Advance Track, who we outsource some of our jobs to, client contact and dealing with any client queries that they contact us about. There are opportunities to get involved with other things that are going on, one way of doing this would secondments, where you can work in a different department for a period to experience the work there. I haven’t done this yet, but it is something that is available in the future should I want it.

Support

The main part of the support I receive is through my line manager. We have regular catch ups to discuss how everything is going, what I’m enjoying, what isn’t going so well etc. These catch ups are scheduled, but even if there was something more urgent that you feel can’t wait, they are more than happy to make time for it.

Looking forward

For now, my main ambition while working at Old Mill is to become ACA qualified, it is a highly recognisable qualification, and hopefully this will allow more doors in Old Mill to open in the future, and I can work towards whatever job role I am passionate about in the firm.
